How to Choose the Right Silicone Oil

Hits: 280 img

Once the basic principle is clear, the next step is selecting the right type of silicone oil.

In general, there are four main categories.

Low-viscosity silicone oils offer excellent spreadability. They form a thin, uniform film quickly and are ideal for fast-cycle production.

However, they have lower retention and are more suitable for short-term or single-use applications.

Medium- to high-viscosity silicone oils provide better durability. They remain on the mold surface longer and form a more stable release layer, making them suitable for continuous production.

Reactive silicone oils, such as hydroxyl or hydride-functional types, can form crosslinked networks on the surface. This creates a more permanent and stable release layer.

They are typically used in demanding applications requiring high consistency and performance.

Modified silicone oils, such as alkyl-modified or polyether-modified types, help adjust compatibility with different substrates.

They are often used to solve issues like migration, surface defects, or adhesion problems.

In practice, factors such as mold material, processing temperature, surface requirements, and application method should also be considered.

A simple guideline is:

Low viscosity for spreadability
High viscosity for durability
Reactive silicones for stability
Modified silicones for special requirements

Choosing the right direction is the key to a successful release formulation.
