What are silicone intermediates DMC/D3/D4/D5?

Hits: 929 img

Silicone intermediates consist of various compounds, including dimethylcyclosiloxane mixed ring (DMC), silicon ether (MM), hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and other siloxane series products. Let's explore these silicone monomers and their applications.

D3 is a tricyclic compound of hexamethylsiloxane. It is a white crystalline substance with a melting point of 75°C and a shrinkage rate of 0.6-0.8%. D3 is primarily used for shrinkage treatment of silicone rubber. Besides synthesizing general organosilicon polymers, D3 can also be utilized in the preparation of specific organosilicon compounds. It serves as a surface treatment agent, coupling agent, cross-linking agent, and more.

D4 is the tetracyclic compound of octamethylsiloxane. It is a pure substance available as a colorless, transparent, or milky liquid. D4 is flammable and odorless. It is produced through the hydrolysis synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, followed by separation and distillation processes. D4 is an important intermediate in the silicone industry and finds applications in the preparation of silicone polymers like methyl silicone oil. It is also used for insulation and moisture-proofing of radio parts and as surface deactivators for gas chromatography glass capillary columns.

D5 is the pentacyclic compound of decamethylsiloxane. It is a colorless and odorless organic silicon compound extensively employed in cosmetics and personal care products. D5 exhibits good compatibility with most alcohols and other cosmetic solvents.

DMC (Dimethylcyclosiloxane) is a mixture of dimethylcyclosiloxane, which includes D3, D4, and D5. It consists of both linear chains and cyclic structures. DMC is used for the polymerization of silicone oil (polysiloxane). It appears as a colorless and transparent oil-like liquid, flammable in nature, with a density range of 0.95-0.97g/cm3.

DMC serves as the primary raw material in the production of silicone rubber and silicone oil. It also finds wide application in rubber filler processing and cosmetics. Dimethylsiloxane mixed ring (DMC) is employed in the preparation of silicone rubber, silicone oil, and other polysiloxane products. These can further be processed to enhance properties such as high and low-temperature resistance, excellent insulation performance, weather aging resistance, ozone resistance, and radiation resistance. DMC enables the production of various improved silicone rubber and silicone oil formulations.
