Application Principle of Epoxy Silicone Oil in Textile Finishing

Hits: 326 img

1. Basic Concept of Epoxy Silicone Oil

Epoxy silicone oil is a type of reactive modified silicone oil obtained by introducing epoxy groups into the polysiloxane molecular structure.
In addition to the inherent properties of silicone oil—such as softness, lubrication, and low surface tension—epoxy silicone oil also exhibits chemical reactivity.

2. Why Epoxy Silicone Oil Is Used in Textile Finishing

Conventional silicone oils are mainly deposited on fiber surfaces through physical adsorption. During repeated washing or mechanical friction, these silicone layers may migrate or be partially removed.
The primary purpose of using epoxy silicone oil in textile finishing is to improve the durability and stability of the softening effect.

This improvement is achieved through the reactivity of the epoxy groups.

3. Reaction Mechanism on Fiber Surfaces

Textile fibers typically contain active functional groups such as hydroxyl or amino groups on their surfaces.
Under appropriate conditions, including heat and suitable processing parameters, the epoxy groups in epoxy silicone oil undergo ring-opening reactions and chemically bond with active groups on the fiber surface or within the finishing system.

Through this mechanism, the silicone chains are partially fixed onto the fiber surface, transforming the interaction from simple physical adsorption to chemical attachment.

4. Practical Application in Textile Processing

Epoxy silicone oil is commonly applied in the form of an aqueous emulsion during textile finishing processes such as padding, dipping, and curing.
During the finishing and curing stages, epoxy groups participate in chemical reactions, resulting in a more stable and durable silicone layer on the fabric.

In practical formulations, epoxy silicone oil is often used in combination with polyurethane, acrylic resins, or crosslinking systems to improve fabric softness, elasticity, and overall comfort.

5. Applicable Fiber Types

Epoxy silicone oil is suitable for a wide range of fibers containing active functional groups, including cotton, viscose, wool, silk, nylon, and their blends.
For relatively inert fibers such as polyester, epoxy silicone oil is typically used together with other resin systems to enhance finishing performance.

6. Performance Characteristics

  • Provides soft, smooth, and non-greasy hand feel

  • Improves fabric elasticity and resilience

  • Enhances wash durability and abrasion resistance

  • Reduces silicone migration and hand-feel deterioration

  • Improves stability of textile finishing performance

7. Technical Summary

Epoxy silicone oil utilizes the reactivity of epoxy groups to chemically bond silicone chains to fibers or finishing systems during textile processing, thereby delivering durable softness and improved stability in textile finishing applications.
