Hydroxyl silicone oil - OH polymer

Hits: 942 img

Hydroxyl silicone oil, also known as dimethyl hydroxyl silicone oil, has a chemical structure represented as HO[(CH3)2SiO]nH. It is a linear polymer with repeating silicon-oxygen bonds as the main chain, methyl groups as side groups, and hydroxyl end-capping. This silicone oil is colorless, transparent, odorless, and tasteless. It is soluble in organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chloroform, ether, and toluene, but insoluble in water and ethanol. Low-viscosity hydroxyl silicone oil exhibits some solubility in water.

Hydroxyl silicone oil finds extensive applications in various fields:

  1. Manufacture of organosilicone hydrogels: Hydroxyl silicone oil is used in the production of organosilicone hydrogels, which are applied as treatment agents for textiles, paper, and leather. They impart properties such as water repellency, oil resistance, and abrasion resistance.

  2. Silicone rubber processing aid: Dimethyl hydroxyl silicone oil is widely employed as a structure control agent in silicone rubber processing. It effectively controls the structural interaction between the mixing rubber and fumed silica, improving processing performance and extending the storage life of the rubber compound.

  3. Intermediate for polysiloxane synthesis: Dimethyl hydroxyl silicone oil serves as an intermediate for synthesizing various polysiloxanes. Polysiloxanes are important polymeric materials widely used in lubricants, sealants, coatings, skincare products, and other industries.

It is worth noting that hydroxyl silicone oil also finds applications as a lubricant, anti-adhesive agent, and surface treatment agent. The specific applications depend on factors such as viscosity, purity, and the desired properties for a particular use.
