Which silicone oil has better demoulding performance and what are the differences?

Hits: 817 img

The following are several common silicone oils with good demoulding performance and their differences:

 Dimethyl silicone oil
- **Advantages**: Excellent lubrication and anti-sticking properties, non-toxic, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, low volatility, no corrosion to molds, can make the surface of demoulding parts smooth. Its performance increases with the increase of silicone oil molar mass, and it maintains good stretchability and surface affinity, can balance demoulding and coating performance, and is suitable for demoulding of various materials and processes, such as rubber, plastic, metal casting and other fields.
- **Disadvantages**: High temperature stability is relatively weak, and decomposition may occur at a mold temperature above 150°C. It is necessary to add antioxidants and reduce the content of oligomers to inhibit decomposition, or improve stability through purification methods such as thin film evaporators.
- **Applicable scenarios**: Demolding of general plastics and rubber products, such as common plastic toys, rubber seals and other molding processes; it is also used in the demoulding of some precision parts with high surface finish requirements, such as electronic product housings.

Polyether modified silicone oil
- **Advantages**: Low surface tension, excellent wetting and spreading performance, can quickly and evenly spread on the mold surface to form an isolation film, improving the demoulding effect. It has good compatibility with organic surfactants, good emulsification and dispersibility, and can be formulated into various release agents according to different needs, such as emulsion type, solution type, etc., and has good biocompatibility, which has advantages in some fields with high requirements for environmental protection and safety.
- **Disadvantages**: The price is relatively high, and under certain extreme conditions, such as high temperature and high humidity environment, the long-term stability may not be as good as dimethyl silicone oil.
- **Applicable scenarios**: It performs well in some precision molding processes that require high wettability and spreadability of release agents, such as optical lenses, electronic chip packaging and other fields; it is also suitable for demolding of food contact products, because its good biocompatibility can ensure the safety of the products.

Methylphenyl silicone oil
- **Advantages**: Thermal stability and low viscosity-temperature coefficient are better than dimethyl silicone oil, and it can still maintain good demolding performance in high temperature environment, is not easy to decompose and volatilize, and can effectively prevent the molding material from sticking to the mold at high temperature, especially suitable for high temperature molding process.
- **Disadvantages**: The cost is high, and the performance in low temperature environment is not as good as dimethyl silicone oil. Its viscosity will increase significantly with the decrease of temperature, which affects the demoulding effect and coating performance.
- **Applicable scenarios**: Mainly used for plastics and rubber products that are molded at high temperatures, such as high-temperature vulcanized rubber products, injection molding of thermoplastic engineering plastics, etc.; It is also used in the manufacture of parts in some fields such as aerospace, electronics and electrical appliances that require extremely high heat resistance.

Fluorosilicone oil
- **Advantages**: It has excellent lubricity, hydrophobicity, demoulding, defoaming and anti-fouling properties, strong chemical inertness, oil resistance, solvent resistance, chemical reagent resistance, can maintain stable demoulding performance in harsh chemical environments and humid, high temperature and other conditions, does not corrode the mold, and has high safety.
- **Disadvantages**: The price is expensive and the preparation process is complicated, which limits its large-scale and widespread application, and its compatibility with some materials is not as good as other silicone oils.
- **Applicable scenarios**: Suitable for molding processes that are often exposed to moisture, high temperature, solvents, fuels and chemicals, such as in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and other industries, where mold demoulding with high requirements for corrosion resistance and chemical resistance is required; it can also be used in some high-end fields, such as the manufacture of precision parts such as aerospace and electronics.

Hydroxyl silicone oil
- **Advantages**: It has good insulation and waterproof properties, can maintain elasticity and stability in a wide temperature range, can be used as a demoulding agent for molding and demoulding of rubber products, and can also be used as a leather lubricant, isolation agent, etc., which can give the product good surface properties.
- **Disadvantages**: It has high reaction activity. During storage and use, it is necessary to avoid contact with substances containing active hydrogen, otherwise a cross-linking reaction may occur and affect its performance.
- **Applicable scenarios**: It is often used for demoulding in the manufacture of electronic components that require insulation performance, such as extrusion molding of wire and cable insulation layers; it is also suitable for molding and demoulding of some rubber products and building caulking materials that require waterproof sealing.
